Why a blog?

After speaking with hundreds of PTs a month, it's clear that front office operations for PT practices vary dramatically based on the organization. This is surprising, since the underlying business models between a 2 location practice and a 500+ location enterprise are largely the same.

It's apparent that PT school doesn't teach this stuff, either– leaving entrepreneurial therapists stuck in an expensive cycle of networking, going to conferences, and hiring coaches. Finally, after getting burned enough times, some figure it out years later, with battle scars to prove it.

In the process of building an AI waitlist platform for physical therapists, we've found ourselves talking to PTs around the clock. Unsurprisingly, some themes come up over and over, and since we can't talk to every PT, the goal of this blog is to communicate some of the most common patterns we see among the most successful organizations.

From large national enterprises to small independent practices, the playbooks are different, but the rules are the same. In this blog, we hope to share them with you.

Who are we?

Penciled is a Y Combinator startup focused on helping PTs fill last-minute cancellations using AI. The founders are Harvard and MIT software engineers, with experience building software at Massachusetts General Hospital, Carbon, and a variety of venture-backed startups.
